GUIDED TOUR OF ORLEANS HOUSE GALLERY, MARBLE HILL PARK AND TURNER’S HOUSE GARDEN, TWICKENHAM TW1 2NL
11.00 a.m to 3.00pm Thursday 8th May 2025

We are very pleased to welcome you to a guided tour with Ricky Pound around three iconic gardens in Twickenham. Ricky is a Trustee at The London Luminaries and House Manager of the Twickenham Museum. Last year he took us on the very successful tour around the Chiswick House and gardens.
Our tour will start at Orleans House Gallery, a property owned by former Secretary of State for Scotland, Mr James Johnston. After viewing the immediate garden, we will look at the magnificent and recently restored James Gibbs Octagon Room, an architectural space which in the 18th century offered fine views of Johnston’s renowned gardens.
We will then take a short walk to nearby Marble Hill House, a property and garden built for Lady Henrietta Howard, mistress of King George II. After viewing several of the garden features including an 18th century icehouse and black Walnut tree, we will then enter the villa and visit the Dining Room with its superb 18th century Chinoserie inspired wallpaper and Great Room, decorated with paintings by Giovanni Paolo Panini of Italian capriccio landscapes. The Marble Hill Revived Project is supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and the National Lottery Community Fund.
We will next go for lunch at the Marble Hill Café, a building contained within the original stable block.
After lunch, we will go for another short walk to JMW Turner’s Villa on Sandycoombe Road. Built to JMW Turner’s own design with the help of his friend, the architect Sir John Soane, originally the villa was accompanied by a five-acre garden which ran towards Richmond Bridge. We will visit at a time when the flowers are out in full bloom.
