2nd EARLY SUMMER GARDEN VISIT

GUIDED TOUR OF UPTON GREY GARDENS, THE MANOR HOUSE, CHURCH ST, UPTON GREY, BASINGSTOKE, RG25 2RD

2pm Tuesday 25th June 2024

We are very pleased to welcome you again to join us in a privately arranged visit to the Upton Grey gardens at the Manor House, a wonderful example of a sensitively restored Gertrude Jekyll garden by the current owners John and Rosamund Wallinger.  Rosamund will take us around the garden and has kindly arranged for tea and cakes afterwards.  Our previous visit was in 2018.

Gertrude Jekyll designed this important historic garden in 1908 for a house belonging to Charles Holme, a leading figure in the Arts and Crafts movement.  It includes many features of a typical Jekyll garden, but on a rather smaller scale than many of her commissions.

John and Rosamund Wallinger bought the almost derelict property in 1984 and the work on this garden’s restoration has been an exciting and rewarding adventure of discovery for them. What they have recreated is now believed to be the most complete and authentic Jekyll Garden in existence – a living museum of Jekyll design.  For a taster, please visit https://gertrudejekyllgarden.co.uk/

Our private visit will include:

  • A tour of the garden from 2.00pm

  • Tea and cakes

  • A garden guide with map and lists of plants in all GJ borders

Booking: Tickets are £15 for BGT members and £18 for non-members.  We do not have to limit numbers this time but we will have to let Rosamund know numbers a week beforehand.

Accessibility:

Parking by the house is limited to 12 cars.  Others are asked to park in the road and to walk through the churchyard to the garden.  Car sharing is again welcomed.

Access to Gardens:  The majority of paths within the Gardens are level or gently undulating and have a smooth gravel surface.   Please let us know at the time of booking if you will need help.

Please let Kim know at BerksGTmembership@gmail.com if you think you may have access difficulties or dietry restrictions.
