SUMMER GARDEN VISIT TO WINDSOR CASTLE
OUR SECOND PRIVATE GUIDED TOUR OF THE SUMMER GARDENS AT WINDSOR CASTLE, WINDSOR, BERKSHIRE. SL4 1NJ
2.00pm Tuesday 10th June 2025

By kind permission of His Majesty The King, and the Constable and Governor, Lieutenant General (Retd) Phil Jones, Berkshire Gardens Trust is delighted to have been invited to visit the gardens of Windsor Castle. This is the second of two visits this year - a unique opportunity for us to see the historic Royal gardens.
Windsor Castle was built by William the Conqueror in the 1070s and The King’s Herbary was referred to in the early 12th Century.

Whenever one visits Windsor Castle, one can always be assured of beautifully tended green spaces. The guiding hand and leadership come from Adam Scott, Gardens and Nursery Manager for Windsor Castle and Bagshot Park. Adam has worked for the Royal Household for 11 years, having spent 4 years at Emmanuel College, Cambridge University.
Adam will be our esteemed guide. Now it is the turn of the summer borders to take centre stage, as the Castle is prepared for the Garter Day Service and Royal Ascot, being held the following week.
We shall visit particularly:

-
The Jubilee Gardens: created by Tom Stuart- Smith in 2002, to mark the Golden Jubilee of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth.
-
The Moat Gardens: the Gardens have been carved out of the dry moat around the Round Tower and has been cultivated since the 17th Century. These are the private gardens of the Castle Constable and Governor, and in June are an abundance of roses and gorgeous perennials.
-
The East Terrace: With its incredible views towards London, these formal gardens were created by King George IV in the 1820s. These are the private gardens of the Monarch which, in the last two years, have been completely remodelled and are now known as the Venus Terrace.
Constable and Governor's Reception: We shall assemble at the end of the tour in the Moat Garden and have the privilege of meeting the Constable and Governor, Lieutenant General (Retd) Phil Jones, who has invited us to join him for a drinks reception. We shall listen to him talk about the history of Windsor Castle and his role of Constable and Governor.

Leave with a Memento: At the conclusion, there may be the possibility to buy some of the plants grown by the Castle staff.
