Berkshire Gardens Trust Late Spring Tour
The Valley Gardens, Virginia Water, Windsor Great Park

Thursday 7th May from 10.15am

We are so lucky to have the opportunity to enjoy a guided visit to the historic
Valley Gardens in Windsor Great Park. Our guide will be Sian Thomas,
Committee Member of the Friends of Savill Garden and Vice Chairman of the
Rhododendron, Camellia & Magnolia Group.

On the northern banks of Virginia Water lies a woodland of twisting trails and seasonal flowers. The Valley Gardens cover 101 hectares (250 acres) of undulating valleys with azaleas, magnolias and exotic blooms from all over the world … including the National Collections of magnolia, rhododendron, Glenn Dale azaleas, as well as Himalayan and Chinese birches.

The vision for the gardens was created 80 years ago by Sir Eric Savill. With the blessing of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, Deputy Ranger Eric Savill and his Head Gardener, later to become Keeper of the Gardens, Hope Findlay turned to the undulating valleys above Virginia Water to house the National collection.

Although Windsor Great Park is a showcase for native woodland, many of the Keepers of the Gardens have chosen to celebrate more international plants and trees. We will see the wonderful National Collection of Rhododendrons as well as the world-famous Punch Bowl that has been recently restored with its Japanese Azaleas.
